A Growing Trend In The Continent: Freelancing

The world is evolving! The number of Africans using the internet is increasing at a rapid pace. The business models of traditional companies have been challenged by the double blow of the virtual economy and globalization, which are spreading rapidly throughout the continent. It only takes a computer and an internet connection to be able to get to work, to work anywhere, and at any time.

Job security is a myth. The cost of hiring and keeping employees inhouse goes way beyond salaries. In fact, businesses are looking for specialized skills for one-off projects.

The job market in African today is difficult. Without being able to find a job that suits them, Africans are rapidly moving towards freelancing.

When it comes to careers, a full-time job has traditionnaly been considered the norm in most countries. However, platform and tech companies such as Uber, Alibaba, and Google  have undermined this long-established concept and have built their success on new business models that change the way many view work with "gig economy."

A gig economy is a free and global market where companies and contractors (independent workers) create  short-term and on-demand professional relationships that are flexible and skill-based.

The gig economy in Africa has grown significantly as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

At this point, if you are already a freelancer, you are now well equipped and ready for what is to come. You may already be doing it as a “side hustle” at the moment. But truth be told, freelancing is becoming the new trend in Africa and a large number of people are joining the bandwagon. Freelancing is getting so real that there are estimates and claims that, it will take up half of the workforce by 2027!

Notwithstanding the challenges, many skilled workers embraced freelancing because of one single reason – freedom.
